Residents, friends and family of the 13-year-old boy fatally shot by police who believed his toy gun was a real AK-47 are making sure their voices are heard.

On Tuesday, hundreds gathered in Santa Rosa, California to express their sadness and outrage over the shooting that occurred last Tuesday when sheriff deputy Erick Gelhaus shot Andy Lopez Cruz dead.

Reports suggest that the deputy fired more than seven times and only gave one warning shout.

This week, we learned that Gelhaus, a 24-year veteran of the force, was a firearms instructor and a gun expert. He said he feared for his life when Lopez turned around and pointed the gun (which was a replica pellet gun) in his direction.

This isn’t the first time in the past week that a protest has been held. However on Tuesday (which was also the same day Andy’s funeral was held), protestors came as far as San Francisco and Oakland to express their concern for not only Andy and his family, but for excessive police force and accountability everywhere.

We’ll keep you updated on the latest in this case.
