The cycle of stupidity continues.

Wear blackface, think it’s funny, get media backlash, say sorry, repeat. Because of the aforementioned, we’ve admittedly turned a blind eye to the foolishness that played out when ELLE France Beauty Editor Jeanne Deroo dressed in blackface earlier this week. But now, in the order these things typically follow, she has issued an apology.

According to Jeanne, she stated she was at a (PRIVATE) party where the theme was “icons,” and she chose to dress as Solange Knowles. And of course, one cannot dress as Solange without painting their skin for emphasis. Forget the afro, amazing prints and stellar dance moves that could have brought the point home. Jeanne did what they all do, claimed the party was private – as if that gives her blackface antics a pass – and said sorry, sorry, sorry, I hope I don’t lose my job, in so many words.

“I realise how much the fact of painting oneself brown is an offensive act. I didn’t realise the seriousness of my action when I went to a private party last Saturday evening, which the theme was ‘Icons’, and where I chose to embody Solange Knowles, of whom I am a fan. During this private party, I posted a picture of myself on my Instagram without intention of hurting anyone. I deeply regret and would like to present all my apologies. I would also like to indicate that this picture published in a private context does not involve in any way the french ELLE magazine I work for, and I am sorry for the prejudice it has caused.”

It’s tired. We’re over it. Just quit with the damn blackface; it’s not a la mode.

If Jeanne, or any other person, was wondering why it is just NOT OK to wear blackface, we’ve broken it down for you here.
