He might be a whole lot of rock hard abs and muscles, but Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has the drive to match.

He covers the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, and inside, his cover story sheds some light on the actor’s ambition and personal life. Dwayne Johnson is best known as a WWE wrestler and for his debut acting role in The Mummy Returns and the successful Fast and Furious franchise, but he didn’t have an easy ride to fame:

“I was told that I had to conform to a standard in Hollywood that would beget me more work, better roles. Which meant I had to stop going to the gym, which meant I couldn’t be as big, which meant you had to distance yourself from wrestling. You essentially had to deconstruct yourself.”

Now that he’s made it through, Dwayne doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. The actor plans to continue his climb to the top with the highly anticipated Hercules film, set to release on July 25 and the 2015 film, San Andreas.

The cover story also discusses Dwayne’s back story and his years of depression from his failed football career, numerous injuries, divorce, and just recently, the death of his Fast and Furious co-star and friend, Paul Walker. All incidents have been hard blows to the former wrestler mentally, but he has bounced back time and time again. Now, his time has come.

“I grew up where, when a door closed, a window didn’t open. The only thing I had was cracks. I’d do everything to get through those cracks — scratch, claw, bite, push, bleed. Now the opportunity is here. The door is wide open and it’s as big as a garage.”
