Nigerian security forces are investigating the mass kidnapping of more than 90 people — 60 women and girls and 31 schoolboys — from villages south of Maiduguri, the capital state of Borno.

The kidnapping, suspected to be carried out by Boko Haram militants, occurred between Thursday and Saturday. The newest mass abduction comes just two months after the terror group kidnapped more than 300 schoolgirls in northeastern Nigeria.

Military officials are looking into reports suspected Islamist insurgents over the weekend raided at least three villages 100 km (60 miles) from the state capital Maiduguri, a source said.

Two residents of the nearby village of Lassa, which wasn’t attacked, told Reuters they spoke to people who reportedly fled as militants killed men and kidnapped “many” women and children.

Separately, at least eight people were killed and 20 wounded by an explosion at a college campus in the heart of the northern city of Kano during school hours on Monday.

News of the kidnapping comes as Nigeria wrapped up its inquiry into the “Bring Back Our Girls” abduction in April.

In the final report, Brigadier General Ibrahim Sabo said 219 girls remained at large, a total virtually unchanged since Boko Haram militants stormed their secondary school in northeast Borno state on April 14 to kidnap them.
