The Divide, a new series for WE tv and its first original scripted drama, tells the story of the human mind crossing the line between good and evil to pursue a life of personal justice.

In other words, what makes people lose sleep at night.

With a stacked cast, including Nia Long (The Best Man Holiday) and Damon Gupton (The Newsroom), the story follows passionate young lawyer-to-be Marin Ireland (Homeland) as she helps get an appeal for a man on death row who she believes is wrongly convicted for murdering a black family.

On the flip side, Gupton’s character, the beloved Philadelphia D.A. who was credited by the black community for putting the man in jail, is busy running for political office, and he won’t have anything get in the way – no matter what.

In between all the justice and politics, Ireland’s character is looking for love.

Can you say drama?

Check out the top 10 reasons to tune into the series premiere of The Divide on Wednesday, July 16th.

Nia Long

Nia Long graces the small screen as a smart and sassy lawyer chasing political dreams with her man, making us fall in love with her all over again.

No elephants in the room

The cast is half black and half white and the storyline deals with racial issues where no party is portrayed as a victim. There is no sugar-coating here. Talk about refreshing.

It gets real

Just when you think you have the show figured out, bloody bricks start crashing through windows. Yeah, it goes there.

Orange is still the new black

This show continues to play on our fascination with what it’s like behind bars. We get Piper Chapman syndrome all over again when trying to decide whether to root for the character in jail or not.

Epic love triangle

Ireland, who plays the lead, is caught between two men who represent two completely different sides of her personality. Will she stick with her cop boyfriend or go for the bad boy?

Miss Independent

That’s why we love her. Ireland’s character is one who knows what she wants and won’t settle for anyone telling her no. Girl power!

Real talent

Richard LaGravenese, Academy Award and Emmy-nominated writer of Water for Elephants wrote the script for the eight-episode series, and Tony Goldwyn, who directed hit series like Scandal and Dexter, directed the feature-film length premiere episode. With talent like that, of course it will be good.

Familiar faces

Paul Schneider of Parks and Recreation takes on a more serious role as a lawyer and Joe Anderson from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn takes on the role of the mysterious convicted murderer.

It’s in good company

The series is produced by AMC, which also produced fan favorites like Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad. The series has potential to follow in their footsteps.

The catchphrase is too accurate

“Everyone is guilty of something.”
