Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

And in the streets of New York City, Los Angeles, Sanford (Florida), and many other cities around the nation, that famous Martin Luther King Jr. quote was more evident than ever.

A day after 29-year-old George Zimmerman was acquitted in the murder of an unarmed, 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, peaceful protestors gathered by the thousands and took to the streets to demand that justice finally be served.

Despite worry that the “not guilty” verdict would cause unrest and rioting, Trayvon supporters remained peaceful and focused on the most important aspect of the demonstrations – justice for all of the Trayvon’s of the world.

In Los Angeles, protestors shut down a major highway to protest the verdict. In Brooklyn, singer Solange Knowles pulled together a peaceful demonstration to begin the conversation of how to move forward, heal and make changes in our justice system. And in Times Square, organizers staged a sit-in against the ills of racism.

Here are some of the most powerful pictures from those protests.

Trayvon, we’ll remember you always. And we’ll continue to fight against the injustices of this nation.
