If you plan on going to the movies during Christmas break, you have a lot of options, some of them better than others. There will be a ton of new movies and even more you just never got around to seeing.

Movies like Gone Girl and Beyond The Lights made our “I want to see that” list, and we can hardly wait for Selma and American Sniper to hit theaters. But which ones are good and which ones should you stay away from this holiday season?

We’ve created a list to help you out. Take a look.

Whiplash

If this movie starring Miles Teller and JK Simmons is playing in your neighborhood, run, don’t walk. It’s an artsy film about a jazz instructor who pushes his protegé harder than Sarge from Full Metal Jacket. Miles does a magnificent job as student Andrew, so don’t be surprised if you hear about this one a lot come awards season.

Top Five

Chris Rock has created a masterpiece. This is the perfect movie to see with your entire family before Christmas dinner, because everybody and they momma makes a cameo, and you’ll be laughing from start to finish. This is Rock’s best work ever.

Selma

Christmas Day is the soft launch of Ava DuVernay’s Martin Luther King flick before its official launch in January. Be one of the first to see this important work.

American Sniper

The trailer alone got us. Another soft launch that’s only in select theaters, but be on the lookout for Cory Hardrict’s performance. His time is now.

Annie

If you’re with the little ones, this is your movie. Oscar award winners and nominees star in this remake of a timeless classic. Fun for the whole family.

Into The Woods

This mish-mash of Disney classics features a hot 16 from Meryl Streep. It’s hit or miss, though. One of my friends put it in his top 10 movies, others said it fell completely apart at the end. I thought it was a fun flick that could be a secondary option if the movie you want to see is sold out. You’ve been warned.

Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb

If not for any other reason, you should check this one out because it’s one of Robin Williams’ last roles.

Interstellar

If you decide on Interstellar, go see it in IMax. Matthew McConaughey plays Middle American better than anyone in the game.

Beyond The Lights

This movie might be the most slept-on film this year. There’s no better time to see this amazing love story unfold than on Christmas with the person you love.
