In an emotional story that kicked off Immigrant Heritage Month 2015, Devious Maids star Dania Ramirez released a video detailing her family’s journey from the Dominican Republic to living the American Dream.

The short documentary — directed by Ramirez and Bev Land and executive produced by GlobalGrind’s Michael Skolnik — takes viewers to the star’s New York City neighborhood, where she interviews family members about what the American Dream means to them.

“The misconception of an immigrant in America is that we’re not productive members of society. I’m an immigrant, my parents are immigrants, my entire family are immigrants, and we came here for work,” Ramirez says in the video.

In a touching moment between the mom and daughter, Ramirez questions her mother about leaving her and her sisters in the Dominican Republic. Her mother, through tears, says she does not regret the decision because they “made it.”

“Our American dream lives within you,” Ramirez’s mother said.

Watch the powerful story of just one of many families who left everything to make a better life in the U.S.
