There’s finally a solution for those nights when no matter how much you want to, you just can’t get in the mood. Women rejoiced this past Tuesday when an advisory panel for the FDA approved the female Viagra, Flibanserin.

It wasn’t until dozens of women spoke to the panel about the struggles related to their low sexual desire that they voted to approve the drug. Others accused the FDA of gender bias, citing the fact that this was the only drug to help women with their decreased libido, while men have many other options.

Now ladies, before you slip out those panties and turn up the slow jams, there are some still some issues with this drug. In the past, the FDA rejected the drug twice because they believed the seriousness of the side effects far outweighed the possible benefits. Side effects like fainting at unexpected times, accidental injury, and low blood pressure aren’t exactly welcome in the bedroom. However, as a condition of its approval, a strict risk management program will be put in place, with additional safety studies and a possible patient registry.

Unlike Viagra, which targets the penis and is taken as needed, Flibanserin works by targeting the brain and must be taken daily. Stephen Stahl, MD, PhD of the University of California at San Diego, and a friend of Flibanserin’s creators, Sprout Pharmaceuticals, explained exactly what the drug is supposed to do.

The brain plays an important role in regulating a woman’s sexual desire, and one of the root causes of persistent and recurrent low sexual desire, or HSDD, stems from an imbalance of neurotransmitters in the brain,” he said.

“Flibanserin is believed to work by correcting this imbalance and providing the appropriate areas of the brain with a more suitable mix of brain chemicals to help restore sexual desire.”

Expect Flibanserin to be on the market by the end of the summer. Just in time for some sweet sweaty summer loving.
