A female Los Angeles police officer was convicted of felony assault after kicking a woman in handcuffs over and over. The victim, Alesia Thomas, eventually passed away. According to Daily Mail:

The jury of 11 women and one man reached its verdict after three days of deliberations in the trial of 50-year-old Officer Mary O’Callaghan. She pleaded not guilty to assaulting a civilian in the 2012 arrest of 35-year-old Alesia Thomas.

O’Callaghan was charged with assault under color of authority, but she was not charged in Thomas’ death. She had been relieved of duty without pay pending an administrative hearing.

O’Callaghan faces a maximum of three years in county jail. Back in 2012, officers arrested Thomas for child abandonment after she reportedly left her two children in a local police lobby at approximately 2 a.m in the morning. After being handcuffed and put into the patrol car, O’Callaghan was seen kicking Thomas in the groin, abdomen, and upper thigh. She was also shoved forcefully, according to the footage.
