So this happened. Again.

Following in the footsteps of other major magazines that culturally appropriated and claimed to discover (commonly known as Christopher Columbus-ing) Black fashions or styles, Elle Canada decided to hail the Dashiki as the newest it-item for summer.

Needless to say, those who know the traditional tunic garment has been rocked by Africans and African-Americans for, well, forever, weren’t going to let Elle slide on this one.

The tweet has since been deleted, but the magazine’s decision to run a piece that yet again erases Black culture will join a growing list of publications who have famously dubbed baby hairs, afros, and even cornrows as trendy or new.
