A week after two reports commissioned by the Cuyahoga County, Ohio prosecutor found that the police-involved shooting death of Tamir Rice was reasonable, the child’s mother is calling for a special investigator to take over the case.

Samaria Rice, flanked by her attorneys at a news conference Friday in Cleveland, said that Cuyahoga County, Ohio prosecutor Timothy J. McGinty should step aside and allow a special prosecutor to take over the criminal investigation into her son’s death, reports ABC News. She expressed concern that he is biased and is working to exonerate the officer involved in the shooting, instead of seeking justice.

“Since the senseless shooting of my son Tamir Rice I have had many sleepless nights and days,” Rice said, according to the television news outlet. “Almost a year now, no justice, no peace.”

Tamir was playing with a toy gun on a playground when ex-officer Timothy Loehmann shot him in Cleveland, Ohio in November 2014. A grand jury will still determine if Loehmann will face criminal charges in the death that came at a time of national protests over police violence in cities across the country.

Per ABC News:

Reports from two outside experts who examined the use of deadly force in the case were released last weekend by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office and concluded that the shooting was “reasonable.”

Rice and her attorney complained that the reports “ignored crucial facts and were skewed in favor of exonerating the officers.”

A spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said in a statement to the news outlet that officials have “confidence in the integrity of the Grand Jury and believe that justice can be achieved.”
