Straight Outta Hollis.

Jam Master Jay, one-third of the pioneering group Run-D.M.C., would’ve been 51 years old today.

Jay was the mastermind behind the group, fronted by Joseph “Run” Simmons and Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels. The Lee jeans-wearing, adidas-stomping crew led rap in its most formidable times during the mid 1980s, and was the first hip-hop collective to have their video “Rock Box” premiered on MTV. The hard-hitting rhymes were paired with equally stone-cold beats produced by Rick Rubin, and the rest is history.

To celebrate the rap legend’s birthday, check out the clip above of the iconic trio performing their aptly titled track “Jam Master Jay” on Soul Train.
