Tuesday July 20 starts the second season of MTV’s show Teen Mom. This show is a spin off from MTV’s show 16 and pregnant. This season follows the girls as they go through the hardships and difficulties teenagers go through when they become pregnant at such a young age, such as, marriage, adoption, religion, gossip, finances, rumors among the community, graduating high school and getting (or losing) a job.

During this season of Teen Mom you follow four girls, Farrah, Maci, Amber and Catelynn as the continue they’re journey through being a young mother.

This show, like most of MTV’s shows, has a lot of people hooked because it gives everyone an insight into a world people have no idea what it’s like to be in.

For the people who have dealt with the teen pregnancy they see the show as something they can relate to and give them a sense of comfort knowing others have been in the same situation.

[pagebreak]The message and the point of shows like Teen Mom are trying to show the hardships that come along with getting pregnant at such a young age, but even with this message they are trying to send it might not always be the message teenagers are getting. When I see a show like this I get the message they are trying to send, the hardships, but what I feel like these shows are doing is sending mixed messages to teenagers.

When it comes down to it you are watching a show like this on a major TV channel. So even though Teen Mom is showing all the problems these girls are going through, at the same time they are glorifying pregnancy at a young age by giving them a show.

Some girls may be watching shows like this and think since these girls got pregnant as a teenager and were able to be on a TV show on a network everyone knows maybe the same will happen for them.

Maybe it’s just me but these days I feel like I see a lot more pregnant girls then I used to when I was a teenager. While I was in high school there were a couple of girls that were pregnant. Today my younger sister goes to the same high school as I did and tells me stories all the time of how she notices another classmate that is pregnant. One day she came home and told me one girl wore a shirt to school that read, “Lets get this straight: I’m pregnant, you’re fat!”

[pagebreak]The point of this post is in no way putting down the show, the people on the show or people that become pregnant at a young age. I just think that when a show that deals with such a serious topic, teen pregnancy, need to make sure the message they want to give off is loud and clear.

Another topic that is causing some controversy lately is that the trendy clothing store Forever 21 has recently launched a maternity line in five states, Arizona, Alaska, California, Utah and Texas.

Forever 21’s target shoppers are teens and young women, since this is their audience they are coming under fire for putting out this new line. Forever 21 is also under attacked for having this line because three of the
