BACKSTAGE BUZZ: BET’s Rip The Runway 2010

So…Although I DVR’d it last week, I finally had the chance to watch the broadcast of BET’s Rip The Runway 2010, which featured performances by Ludacris, Jannelle Monae, B.O.B., Trina and hosting by Pooch Hall (from The Game) and Nicki Minaj. You know it is always interesting to see the finished product when you’re part of the live uncut action…Those little segments featuring Audrey Smaltz and Dwight were kinda cute.

But aside from the obvious mayhem backstage there was a lot to see during the taping event at the Hammerstein Ballroom.  Celeb stylistas Misa Hylton (Diddy’s ex) and Dwight aka Dwrong from Bravo’s Housewives of Atlanta were making the rounds filming their own behind-the-scenes segments and publicist BJ Coleman (formerly Kimora Lee’s PR guru)
seemed to be surrounded by an entourage of some of the finest ‘professional’ male models I had ever seen. Well, maybe it just looked like they were models because everyone else seemed to have some sort of purpose for standing around back there…Lol.

Now, I was hyped to get first looks at designer Tracy Reese’s fab Spring/Summer collection and I was definitely looking forward to Ludacris’ performance of How Low Can You Go! The shows other featured designers included Tennille White, who I worked with, and Gavin Douglas who had some nice looks too (don’t you think)?

And in true BET fashion, pun intended, there was a sea of pretty faces complete with a fabric flying everywhere and full heads of hair weaves and pins…And I’m no hair stylist but even I had to take a comb to some of the models right before they hit the stage. I just couldn’t let ‘em go out like that…and where was hair and makeup?!!! But anyway, nearly every body seemed to be built like ‘retired’ video vixen Melyssa Ford and nearly everybody dropped it LOW when Luda came out on the stage (including me)!

Needless to say RTR was an entirely different scene than the tents at Bryant Park, not only because I felt the need to stash my cell, wallet and car keys in my bra all day, but also because I appreciated the caliber of designers spotlighted this year.

To top it all off, I ran into a few folks I knew, including the fly co-owner of the nail polish brand Ginger + Liz Colour Collection, who found a way to get Nicki Minaj to wear her new “Hot N’ Bothered” nail colour during the show…I even chit chatted with Janelle Monae (Brilliant)! All in all it was a blast and I can’t wait to do it again next year.
