Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who was famous for her self-portraits. In her short-life she suffered and survived through polio, a tragic bus accident, and multiple miscarriages. She was set to go to premedical school but after her bus accident, Kahlo was stuck recovering from her major injuries by spending a year in bed, where she began her artistic work.

Her artwork is considered magic realism, and resembled the trials and tribulations of her life. She married Diego Rivera, a muralist, and traveled around with him, including New York City; Rivera painted a mural in one of the Rockefeller buildings, which sparked some controversy. Their marriage proved not to be successful after Rivera’s multiple infedilities. They continued to work together in various efforts, where Kahlo ended up having her own alleged affair with Soviet communist Leon Trotsky. Her portraits truly spark thought and bring her personal stories to life. Today would have been Frida Kahlo’s 103 birthday.
