One of the best and biggest festivals in the country, South By Southwest, (SXSW) is officially underway in Austin, Texas.

From now until March 20th, thousands of industry insiders and fans head to the Lone Star State to take in the newest and coolest in the world of film, interactive technology, conferences and of course, music. Over 2,000 artists rock over 90 different venues around downtown Austin for more than four days.

Tons of free music, epic performances and collaborations culminate in some of the most talked about moments in music for the whole year.

SXSW is known as the epicenter of the fest, featuring the newest and hippest up and coming musical talent in hip-hop and indie rock. If you don’t have a badge for the actual fest, there are the sponsored parties that only require RSVP.

Today the music portion of the fest is in full swing, most notably the FADER Fort begins tonight with Oh Land, Young The Giant, Raphael Saadiq and Yelawolf headlining tonight. The fort is located at 101 E. 5th Street and is free as long as you RSVP. Since Yela just signed with Eminem’s Shady Records, maybe the MC will make a collaborative appearance? This show is one not to miss.

GlobalGrind has all of the coolest SXSW shows to catch, parties to attend and places to eat and drink in Austin, so check back each day until the end of the fest for the scoop on what’s happening.

There is something for everyone at the SXSW music showcases. Tonight the VIBE House kicks off at Venue 222 with performances by Chiddy Bang, Mike Bigga and Tech N9ne. You can get into the House with a pass and an RSVP.

If you want to go the rock route, standouts Ted Leo, The Black Lips and The Black Angels are all performing. Check out the schedule for more details.

A ton of cool bands are playing at the after party at Red 7, a cool, crazy open air bar and venue. If you hit up Red 7 you know you’re going to have a hell of a good time. Tonight’s festivities are hosted by Terrorbird Media and Force Field PR. It’s their third annual celebration and features Toro Y Moi, The Rural Alberta Advantage and much buzzed about psychedelic rockers Neon Indian. If you don’t want to check out the bands, head into the free arcade room and play some pool or air hockey.

Today we want some hot dogs and Frank’s is the spot. Located at 4th and Colorado, Frank’s makes all their own dogs and has some awesome options with condiments like huckleberry compotes and grilled coleslaw. Plus there’s a dog called the Notorious P.I.G.! If you aren’t into meat, get a veggie dog or portobello mushroom cheesesteak.
