The September issue of Italian Vogue is certainly inspired by the flooding media coverage of the oil spill.  Greased up in oil, the models allude to the famous dead pelicans and other birds that were popularly pictured in the media.  Steven Meisel the photographer in charge is at no shortage of controversy over this editorial spread but to be trendsetter, which is essentially what Vogue represents, it must be provocative.

It’s hard to see the actual articles of clothing that are being featured in this ‘fashion’ spread which makes the intent and the effects of the piece even more ambiguous.  Interpretations of this spread will definitely cause friction, is this spread supposed to highlight the atrocity of man-made disasters or is it an exploitation of a tragic environmental event used for publicity?  Tell us what you think!
