Jason Collins, the first openly gay athlete in a major American team sport, has an ex-fiancée who finally decided to share her side of the story in an interview with Cosmopolitan.

Carolyn Moos, a former WNBA player herself, met the seven-foot Collins as a freshman at Stanford. When they ran into each other by chance after graduation in 2001, the two began a serious relationship that lasted until Collins unexpectedly called off their wedding in July of 2009. According to Moos, he said simply, “I’m just not sure,” and did not provide “tangible reasons” or an explanation.

Understandably, Moos was caught off guard when the man who called her his soulmate phoned to tell her he was gay.

“I had no idea. I’m sure a huge weight is off your shoulders. During all the years I had known him, I never would have guessed that he would come out as gay….I can’t imagine what it’s like to go through all the stages he has gone through, all the deep layers. I don’t know what it’s like to wear a mask for 34 years. It’s sad that society puts that kind of pressure on a person. I also understand the macho stereotypes men face in the NBA.”

Moos explains that she feels very compassionate towards the man she envisioned her future with, but she also feels “deeply hurt.” She feels her tale could help other women who have been in a similar situation.

Carolyn insists she has a wonderful life in L.A. and that she is optimistic for the future.
