It may be a little too early for some, but for others it’s something that has been a long time coming. The buzz of the late Cory Monteith taking on a new, more intense role in an upcoming film has finally surfaced. And this time a picture of Cory in character comes with more info on the film.

Cory plays a drug-addict sent to prison for murder in the upcoming film, McCanick, which is set to debut at the Toronto Film Festival. The actor sports a very different look and persona than his typical Glee character in the film.

Its director tells PEOPLE that Monteith, who died of a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol on July 13, knew he could play the character because of his troubled past.

“He was like, ‘I can do this character. I know this character. I was this character. I have lived elements of this.’ He said, ‘I was a troubled youth.’ “
