One of the most controversial hip-hop songs of the year could have been Jay Z’s.

According to producer/music mogul No I.D., the beat for Big Sean’s “Control” was meant for Jay Z. During an interview with Complex, No I.D. revealed how he decided to give Big Sean “Control” instead of Jay Z.

“I told him I felt like he needed to do some straight, hardcore Hip Hop records. Sometimes we focus so much on selling records that we leave some artistic points uncovered…I had this beat.  I had actually done it for Jay, right before I let Sean hear it. I said, ‘You should take this beat. I think it would be great for you to show up on one of these beats. Forget money. Forget everything.'”

Could you imagine if Jay Z recorded a verse or an entire song on “Control?” The saga of Big Sean’s controversial song would’ve been completely different.

Big Sean’s sophomore album, Hall Of Fame, is currently available on iTunes and at a music retailer near you.
