Solange Knowles has the world rocking to her new joint “Lovers in the Parking Lot.”

In an exclusive interview with NecoleBitchie.com, the superstar – who loves to work those cool au naturale curls – talked all about her passion for songwriting. She even discussed the inspiration behind writing Beyonce’s “Why Don’t You Love Me?”

Not to worry, the interview wasn’t just about music – Solange also revealed some details about her relationship with music video director boyfriend Alan Ferguson.

Check out some highlights below and the full interview in the video above:

On songwriting and penning a track for Beyonce:

The part about songwriting that I love is that I wouldn’t necessarily sing [the songs] myself. [It’s a] really fun expression of myself in another way. I actually wrote “Why Don’t You Love Me” for my sister and it was one of those things where I had just been in a relationship situation where I was just not getting it and then it just came very naturally. I was just like, sonically this just doesn’t really work for me so there are those situations where I have an artist in mind, whether they sing it or not.

On having a bunch of songs perfect for Mariah Carey:

I have a ton of songs that I would just kill for Mariah Carey to sing. And I write them like, ‘What would Mariah do?’ She’s actually a brilliant songwriter and writes her own music but if she were ever open to it I would surely…I mean it’s really cool. I’ve written gospel songs. I’ve written country songs. It’s a really, really great space to be in where sonically those songs don’t fit really fit at all on my record but I still love the expression of writing them.

On her relationship with Alan and pursuing him:

I’ve been in a relationship now for five years. Certainly, in the beginning I was the one who approached him so I have always sort of historically been one of those girls that goes after something that I’m into. I’m not very old school and like, I’m gonna wait on you. Wait for you to approach me type of situation. I have a lot of guy-like quintessential relationship qualities that I have had to work on.
