We knew this was coming.
The parents of one of the accused Maryville rapists who allegedly assaulted two teenage girls are coming to their son’s defense in a major way.
Shirley Barnett told a reporter from the Daily Mail that her son, Matthew, is struggling and suffering from the “unfair” pain that the “one-sided” rape accusations are causing.
“The more you dig, you will get closer to the truth. It is not on the surface, you’re going to have to dig for it. Unfortunately we can’t help with that because that is not our personality,” said Barnett.
His father piggybacked on her statements.
“My kid is being assassinated. The way this has all been spun, for example my son being a football star, he was not a football star, he was a back up.”
A statement which Gawker pointed out somehow aligns his innocence with his horrible football skills. Interesting.
But the Barnetts weren’t done. When asked how their 19-year-old son was holding up, his mother had this to say:
“Is Matthew OK? How can you go through this and be OK, you can’t go through this experience and be OK. You can’t have your picture plastered all over the world news and be portrayed as something when you know in your heart what happened and be OK. How can anybody in our family be OK over this?”
I’m going to go out on a limb and say the victims feel the same way. Just saying…
