With a new wife, a slew of cult classics spinning on the radio, a mention in just about every high-profile magazine interview (and some damn good skin to boot), Pharrell Williams is having quite the year. With the aforementioned in mind, it’s no surprise Pharrell was named “Hitmaker of the Year” in GQ’s new Men of the Year issue.

Recognized for his incredible, chart-topping 2013 — one in which “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky” (two songs Pharrell was involved with) duked it out at the top of the charts — the 40 year-old musician explains to GQ why he thinks the two songs were so well-received this year.

“Both songs are for people who need a break,” he explains. “There’s a lot of f*cked-up travesty in the world. Sometimes you just need a Hallmark card. Sometimes you just need to shake your ass.”

And shake these asses we will!
