On Tuesday, after President Obama delivered his State of the Union Address, a powerful movement of young people delivered theirs — a call for social justice and equality that came on the heels of the group’s pre-State of the Union #BarackTalk Twitter Townhall (where civic engagement groups talked about priorities of millions of young voters of color).

In other words, the address and #BarackTalk, a collaboration between the League of Young Voters and the Dream Defenders, was powerful, engaging and outlined the issues plaguing our community, such as gun violence, income inequality, access to education, and immigration. In the end, the #BarackTalk trended with over 4 million impressions and left a group of young adults fired up and ready to change the nation.

That message was presented, passionately, with the post-SOTU address, delivered by Phillip Agnew of the youth empowerment group, the Dream Defenders.

“The emerging face of our country has begun to fight for the world we will inherit. Our generation knows that true change is more than words and slogans. We are building towards it at every level and, in 2014, we will show our power at the polls,” Agnew said.
