What’s one of the best ways to learn about our environment? Television, of course. In the world of pop culture, we’re able to discover new things about the earth in a fun, creative way. Here are some of the characters that love the planet and never had a problem showing it.

Captain Planet

Captain Planet

The Planeteers were able to save the environment with their special abilities and when they couldn’t, they would call on Captain Planet. Every episode would educate viewers on pollution, ocean life and animal rights. The show not only was fun and positive, but the messages were always thoughtful, proving the importance of teamwork to create a better planet.

Annie Edison

Community

Greendale Community College’s popular study group is made up of many characters, but the most environmental is Annie Edison. Annie is always ready to raise awareness about free speech, oil spills, and hurricanes. Through plays and dioramas with Jeff Winger and the rest of the gang, Annie makes it a point for everyone to care about Mother Earth.

Chris Traeger

Parks and Recreation

The former city manager of Pawnee lives life to the fullest with Mother Nature always in mind. A proud vegan who cares about the health of his friends, Chris never judges Ron for his love of hunting, or Leslie for wasting paper with her 200-page-long policies. Encouraging his friends to be healthy with vegetable loaves and shakes, Traeger makes it fun to be green.

The Hulk

The Incredible Hulk

The big green monster loves the great outdoors and is committed to the forest life by ditching his clothes. One thing he hates? Folks who create pollution in the air and make fun of his purple shorts. Whatever you do, don’t make him angry.

Shrek

Shrek

Shrek’s lifestyle has changed through the years, but the ogre loves his swamp roots and doesn’t like all that fancy stuff, like cars and Twitter. Give him a karaoke machine and he’ll be the best monster to make going green fun.

Lisa Simpson

The Simpsons

Lisa isn’t only the smartest Simpson, but she also loves the environment. She takes a stand when it comes to eating clean and tries to enjoy the great outdoors with her family. Hey, Facebook for a kid could be very tempting!

Topanga Lawrence

Boy Meets World

Topanga is always passionate about relationships, social responsibility and the environment. Remember the poem she wrote about the ozone layer? She loves the earth and doesn’t care if people make fun of her beliefs. She taught viewers that being unique was cool, and loving the earth was even cooler.

Sanitation Twins

Portlandia

If you don’t know much about IFC’s Portlandia, just check out the Sanitation Twins. One of the many characters that Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein play on the sketch comedy show are sanitation twins Marcus and Madelyn Harris. They love to recycle almost any and everything. From lids to broken hearts, there’s a bin for everything. Check it out above.

Phoebe Buffay

Friends

Phoebe is eco-friendly when she wants to be and loves animals (i.e: Smelly Cat.) She refuses to eat anything with a face and is against fur coats – even though she looks great in them. Some of Phoebe’s best environmental moments where when she saved a Christmas tree from being torn down and weirdly befriending the rat that lived in her apartment. A little crazy but still green, right?

The Lorax

The Lorax

If you’re a fan of the original cartoon or the animated film, you know that the Lorax cares about the trees and the environment. Even when some people didn’t care about the harm they were causing, Lorax taught others the importance of responsibility and respecting Mother Nature.
