When racists throw bananas in your face, you eat them.
According to Color Lines, that’s exactly what Barcelona’s Barça soccer player Dani Alves did when racist sports fans threw a banana on the field during a game against Villarreal in Spain over the weekend. His teammate walked off the field, insulted, but Alves found humor in it.
Barça went on to beat Villarreal 3-2, and Alves was applauded for his quick-witted response. The player even posted a Vine video on his Instagram page with a few words from his father:
My father always told me: son eats banana which prevents cramping lol, as you guessed it? hahaha #somosmaisqueisso #ficaadica
After the incident, Alves’ friends and family created the hashtag #Weareallmonkeys to support the player. Alves spoke with reporters after the game about his long-lasting issue with racist fans.
“I’ve been here 11 years and I’ve been suffering this whole time, he said. “So I just face it with humor.”

His teammate Neymar also posted a photo with his adorable son eating bananas:
With the Spanish government reportedly backpedaling when it comes to racism in the sport, we’re glad that Alves and his strong group of supporters can reply with humor.
