The World Wide Web showed its ignorance again this week, when a petition for Nintendo to change Link, a main character in the upcoming Legend of Zelda game, to a young black female backfired.

The petition, created by Anton Watabe from Detroit, Michigan on Change.org, has ruffled some feathers, but it hasn’t stopped Watabe from standing behind his belief in the need for diversity in the gaming world.

“For too many years have the black community been underrepresented in the video game industry,” Watabe wrote on Change.org. “Nintendo went too far this time when they chose to make the new Link white and white only. We need to end this injustice, equality has sadly still not been truly achieved.”

As you can probably imagine, this petition did not garner the support Watabe thought he might get. Instead, he received responses like this:

“Signed by all the black Zelda fans and white fans who don’t want to be perceived as racist. Seriously, who gives a s**t. If changing Link’s race and gender will actually improve the gameplay, then I’m all for it. If it’s just to satisfy people who want diversity for diversity’s sake, F**K THEM,” said one commenter on Gamepur.

Unfortunately, in this world there are still people who aren’t ready for the evolving faces represented in media.
