A Guatemalan man was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after authorities found three pounds of cocaine hidden in cookies in baskets.

Mauricio Isidro Rivera Hernandez was stopped by U.S Customs and Border Protection officers after he arrived from Guatemala. Rivera Hernandez was then taken to a private room to have his luggage searched, and that’s when authorities discovered that the cookies were made with something a little extra…and it wasn’t love.

Inside the cookies officers found 118-small oval pellets of cocaine. The pellets contained a total of three pounds of cocaine with an approximate street value of $52,000, according to CBP spokesman Anthony Bucci.

“CBP officers remain ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these dangerous drugs, regardless of the concealment methods employed by these would-be smugglers,” said Robert E. Perez, director of CBP’s New York field operations.

Rivera Hernandez was arrested on site and faces narcotics smuggling charges. He will be prosecuted by the New Jersey State District Attorney office in Newark.

Lesson of the day: Don’t use grandmas baked goods to smuggle your drugs across the border. You’ll ruin a damn good cookie.
