It might be a day for recognizing our country’s independence, but many of us are also celebrating the much-needed and definitely deserved four-day weekend. The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and as we all gear up for a night filled with fireworks and fire up our grills, it might be time to start thinking about what to wear to all the different events happening. So in order to prepare for the 4th, we’ve got a guide to rocking the day from noon to night.

Ladies, forget overdressing in American flag gear or simply wearing a maxi dress. Tweak the regular trends and make them your own with a pair of denim overalls or a checkered mini skirt. You can still rock a striped tee or “USA” on your chest, just with a twist. And don’t forget a good pair of sneakers or sandals, and sunglasses that will be able to hold out during a backyard barbecue or midday walk.

As the sun sets, it’s probably time to change out of your day clothes and into something more appropriate for dinner plans. Break out a maxi dress and sandals or a pair of hot red slacks and nude heels. Don’t forget to add your own flair with a cute clutch and a jacket.

As for the men, daytime outfits can be more relaxed. Pick out a pair of your favorite shorts and pair them with a graphic tee or tailored shirt. Whether the shorts are camouflage or denim, they’ll easily go with just about any shirt. And don’t forget to pick out the newest pair of kicks and a hat to block the sun while standing out by the grill.

Around dinner, it’s probably time to turn in the shorts and put on a good pair of pants. They can be anything from denim jeans to dress pants. The top can also range from a decent t-shirt to a collared shirt. Just make sure it hasn’t been lying around in the back of the closet.

Now go forth and grill!
