Growing up in the spotlight isn’t easy—we all see how it’s been working out for Amanda Bynes. But while some celebrities have a tough time with the trials and tribulations in the public eye, others, like Anne Hathaway, have kept their struggles much more private – until now.

The 31-year-old actress is on the cover of ELLE UK’s November issue, and if looks could kill, consider us six feet under. She sits pretty, scratch that, sexily, in an Emporio Armani pantsuit, her jacket left open to give us a peek of a lacy bra.

Inside, Anne opens up about why she’s been lying low for the past year or so to “chill out” after struggling to find herself, telling the British glossy:

“This fame thing? F–ked me up for a really long time. I didn’t know how to do it; I didn’t know how to engage with it; it stressed me out. And people would say, ‘You just have to be yourself,’ and I was like, ‘But I don’t know who that is yet!'”

And in case you were wondering, Anne really couldn’t care less what you think about her:

“I’ve realized that don’t need validation from anybody. At all,” she admits. “I’m not sitting here now worrying, ‘What do you think of me?’ With all due respect, you seem like a lovely lady, but I don’t need you, or anyone else, to like me. And that’s so liberating. It’s a big reveal, man.”

Pick up a copy of ELLE UK, on newsstands today, to read her interview in its entirety.
