It’s no wonder why Teyana Taylor makes some have “Dreams of F*ckin’ A R&B B*tch.” She’s every man’s fantasy come to life: cute face, small waist, with her own signature steez to boot, all of which is evident on the cover of Rolling Out.

But even more so, she’s a powerhouse singer—with a co-sign from Kanye West, no less—who after seven long years, is about to release her debut album. Before her big reintroduction with VII next week, the Harlem native takes center stage on the cover of Rolling Out in an oversized fur coat sans a shirt, and tells the magazine all about the journey it’s been to get there:

“Seven is the number of completion. Seven actually has different meanings, but for me, I feel like I’ve been in the business for seven years and [there have] been a lot of bumpy roads and detours and all types of stuff going on within those seven years. But now in the seventh year, everything is finally completed and is coming together. It’s done and I can give you a full body of work. So that number means a lot to me and this year is very important to me.”

The 23-year-old Def Jam artist opens up about other important matters in her life, like her much-discussed past and current relationships. See some excerpts from Teyana’s interview below, along with shots from her spread.

Working with Yeezy & Pharrell:

“Pharrell and Kanye are perfectionists and that’s all they surround themselves with and that’s all they know,” she shares. “When you’re around that, it automatically rubs off on you. So everything I do has to be perfect, it can’t be half-a–ed.”

On the negativity from her breakup with Brandon Jennings:

“I don’t block that s— out; it hurts,” Taylor says. “But then you also have the brighter side of things. It’s a give and take. If you can take compliments, then you should be able to take when people have negative things to say.”

Her relationship with Iman Shumpert:

“I’m happy. I’m not on the phone too much and I’m not really on social media now. When you have a peace of mind, which is your companion, you listen to your man so when he’s telling you to calm down, then eventually you let it go.”

On her future:

“I personally don’t know what my legacy will be because I feel like [there] is so much more left to me,” she explains. “I feel that if I try to predict the future, I will be limiting myself. If I say I want to be a mogul, I might just be more than that. So I’m kind of living in the now and building my brand and empire, so 20 years from now, I can say exactly what I am.”
