Although the family of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old who was killed by a Ferguson police officer, is still struggling with his death, they’re using their loss as an avenue to bring attention to a larger issue. In honor of his memory, Brown’s family left an empty seat at the dinner table on Thanksgiving night. The gesture was symbolic of the injustice of the grand jury’s decision to not indict the police officer that left Brown dead in the street for more than four hours. An image of the Brown family having Thanksgiving dinner was released by an advocacy group called Ferguson Action and quickly circulated around the internet. The photo caption read “Mike Brown’s family sits at the table for their first holiday dinner without him. #StolenLives” The #StolenLives campaign was designed to show people that those who have lost their lives at the hands of police are remembered within their communities. Other families who have been affected by police violence also left empty seats at their dinner table for their fallen loved ones including the family of Oscar Grant. Read more.


Ferguson Protesters Disrupt the Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC

During the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, viewed by millions as they prepare for their holiday feast, protesters who were upset about the verdict in Ferguson attempted to disrupt the festivities. It was reported that protesters clashed with police officers, resulting in 6 arrests and 1 summons. “We will tolerate peaceful demonstrations,” NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said in a statement. “We will not tolerate under any circumstance, violence or anything that induces fear.” Prior to the parade police officials were warned about the possibility of protestors disrupting the parade. Ray Rice Wins Appeal against the NFL

Former Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice won an appeal of his indefinite suspension from the NFL, which now makes him eligible to sign with any team and get back on the field immediately. The appeal from Rice’s lawyers stated that the modification of his initial suspension by the National Football League made it seem like the former running back was being sentenced twice. “I would like to thank Judge Barbara Jones, the NFL Players Association, my attorneys, agents, advisors, family, friends and fans — but most importantly, my wife Janay,” Rice said in a statement. “I made an inexcusable mistake and accept full responsibility for my actions.” The NFL is now receiving backlash for their decision to reinstate Rice into the league.
