As the country mourns the two NYPD officers Ismaaiyl Brinsley killed over the weekend, his first victim is currently in critical condition.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Brinsley was on the verge of killing himself early Saturday morning when he arrived at his ex-girlfriend’s house in Baltimore. After she helped thwart his suicide plans, Brinsley shot ex Shaneka Thompson in the abdomen. Brinsley then stole her phone and fled the scene.

Thompson’s neighbor spoke out about the shooting, saying the 29-year-old was pleading for her life.

Yevette Seay said she talked to Thompson through her closed front door and she could see the bloodied woman through the peep-hole.

“I told her to hang in there. I was afraid to ask her too many questions because she was hysterical,” Seay said. “I could hear something going on and it wasn’t pleasant. Then I heard some screaming, then she went out onto her balcony and screamed for help.”

According to Seay, Thompson said: “‘He shot me, I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die.'”

Seay was too startled to open the door, so she called 911. Thompson – a health insurance specialist with the Veterans Administration – was taken to a local hospital, where she’s expected to recover from her injuries. Brinsley reportedly called Thompson’s mother and said the shooting was a mistake.

After arriving in New York City on a bus that morning, Brinsley threw away Thompson’s phone and later shot officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos to death before killing himself.

Brinsley’s mental state has also come into question, with friends and family claiming he was an unstable person. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
