The girlfriend of John Crawford III, the 22-year-old fatally shot by police in an Ohio Walmart for carrying a fake gun, is believed to be the woman killed in a Dayton, Ohio car crash on News Year’s Day, police say.
Tasha Thomas, 26, and Frederick Bailey, 30, were ejected from the car, a gray Pontiac, at about 3:00 p.m. Police say the car was speeding. County Coroner’s records matched the name, hometown, and date of birth to Tasha Thomas, who was on the phone with Crawford before police shot him on Aug. 5 of last year.
After the shooting, police aggressively questioned Thomas for nearly two hours, suggesting she knew Crawford was carrying an actual firearm. He was not.
An investigation into the crash continues.
Autopsies will be performed Friday on Thomas and Bailey, a coroner’s official said.
Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bailey was taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
