If you watched the Cosby Show, then you’re very familiar with Malcolm-Jamal Warner, the young man who played Bill Cosby‘s son, Theo, for the duration of the series.

As we all know Bill Cosby is going through rough times right now, as dozens of women have come forward to accuse him of sexual assault and rape. Now, Warner is speaking up about the allegations against his “mentor,” telling Billboard magazine that it’s been a very “painful” ordeal for him.

In a new interview, he reveals to the publication:

“He’s one of my mentors, and he’s been very influential and played a big role in my life as a friend and mentor. Just as it’s painful to hear any woman talk about sexual assault, whether true or not, it’s just as painful to watch my friend and mentor go through this.”

He went on to say:

“I can’t really speak on any of the allegations because obviously, I was not there. The Bill Cosby I know has been great to me and great for a lot of people,” he continued. “What he’s done for comedy and television has been legendary and history-making. What he’s done for the black community and education has been invaluable. That’s the Bill Cosby I know. I can’t speak on the other stuff.”

Former Cosby Show castmates Phylicia Rashad and Keshia Knight Pulliam also recently spoke up on his behalf. ICYMI, check out their Rashad’s response here.
