The Alabama police officer that used excessive force on an Indian resident in Madison has turned himself in, and is now facing assault charges.

According to reports, Officer Eric Parker has been recommended for firing from the police force after dash cam footage of the incident surfaced, which shows the man walking down the street near his son’s new home, committing no evident crime before being confronted by authorities.

Chief Larry Muncey said of the incident:

“I found that Officer Eric Parker’s actions did not meet the high standards and expectations of the Madison City Police Department.”

AL.com reports:

Parker turned himself in to Limestone County today, said Chief Muncey. He will face charges of assault third degree. Muncey apologized to Patel, his family and all of Madison. “Our desire is to exceed everyone’s expectations.”

Parker was released on a $1,000 bond.

Muncey said the FBI is conducting a “parallel inquiry to ascertain if there were any federal violations.”

Attorney Hank Sherrod filed suit today in federal court, arguing police used excessive force and that they had no cause to stop Patel on a public sidewalk and search him.

The confrontation and assault left Sureshbhai Patel partially paralyzed in some limbs, as the officers did not understand him since he didn’t speak English. He is set to undergo spinal fusion surgery, and has also had cervical fusion surgery.
