Samuel Monroe Jr. built a career playing the kind of characters that stayed with you long after the credits rolled. In the wake of his passing, we honor him with 5 movies that showcase his incredible talent.
The Los Angeles born actor died Wednesday (Aug. 26) at 52 after battling meningitis and MRSA pneumonia. Monroe appeared in more than 25 film and television projects throughout his career.
While Monroe may be best remembered for Menace II Society and The Players Club, his resume stretched across decades of Black cinema. As Deadline reports, his career began in 1993 and included memorable appearances in Tales from the Hood, Set It Off and Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood.
Fox43 notes that Monroe ultimately appeared in more than 25 movies and television shows altogether. He was filming until he became ill.
Monroe’s career may not have always placed him at the center of the screen, but his work was woven into some of the most recognizable Black films of his generation. His performances helped create the worlds audiences continue to revisit today.

1. Menace II Society (1993)
Monroe made his film debut in the Hughes Brothers’ gritty coming-of-age classic. Set in South Central Los Angeles, the movie follows Caine as he navigates violence, poverty and the pressures surrounding him. Monroe’s early appearance helped establish him as part of a landmark moment in Black film.
2. Tales from the Hood (1995)
The horror anthology delivered social commentary alongside supernatural scares, tackling issues including racism, police brutality and domestic violence. Monroe was part of a cast that helped make the film a cult favorite and an enduring piece of Black horror history.
3. Set It Off (1996)
Monroe appeared alongside Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah and Vivica A. Fox in this crime drama about four women who turn to bank robbery after facing financial struggles and systemic barriers. The film remains one of the defining Black crime movies of the 1990s.
4. Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996)
Monroe showed another side of his range in this hilarious parody of the hood movies dominating Hollywood at the time. The Wayans brothers’ comedy became a quotable classic, and Monroe was part of its stacked ensemble.
5. The Players Club (1998)
Directed by and starring Ice Cube, The Players Club gave Monroe another opportunity to work within a memorable ensemble. The film follows Diamond, played by LisaRaye McCoy, as she navigates life and work at a nightclub while trying to build a better future.
