Pop star Avril Lavigne has been noticeably absent from music for the past few years and many fans were demanding answers.

Now, the 30-year-old graces the cover of PEOPLE magazine to finally open up about her long hiatus. In the issue, she revealed a serious battle with Lyme Disease.

She told the magazine, “I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed. My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”

The singer believes she was bitten by a tick sometime last spring.

“I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months. I thought I was dying.”

According to PEOPLE, Avril has been recuperating at her home in Ontario, where she spends time with family, watches movies, and keeps up with fans through social media.

But don’t feel sorry for her. The skater girl says she feels 80 percent better and that her new single “Fly” will be released this month in support of the 2015 Special Olympics.
