It’s only Monday and a police officer has already done something stupid.

Florida police officer Michael Szeliga of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department reportedly showed up drunk to accept an award from Fort Lauderdale’s Mothers Against Drunk Driving chapter. The accolade was in recognition of landing more than 100 DUI arrests. In what may be one of the strongest cases of irony ever, even his supervisors categorized him as being “wasted” and promptly sent him back to his hotel room.

Szeliga is also being accused of driving drunk to the function, though he denies that claim, saying he only had one or two drinks. The jury is still out on whether he’s a lightweight, or a liar.

Fellow officers were baffled by his behavior. “It was wrong, and again, one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard of. When I first heard about it, that was (what) my reaction was. ‘Come on, you’ve got to be kidding me. Really?’” Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said.

Szeliga was suspended with pay (basically a day off) and he had to write an apology letter to the higher-ups. Michael was already slated to be promoted to detective, and his little mishap didn’t shake his plans- he currently serves as a detective in the sheriff’s Crimes Against Children unit.
