On Sunday, former president Jimmy Carter announced to his church class that his grandson Jeremy Carter had unexpectedly passed away.
Just two weeks prior, he revealed that he’d beaten cancer to the same group.
Carter said that 28-year-old Jeremy was not feeling well on Saturday when he decided to take a nap in the family’s Peachtree, Ga. residence, the NY Daily News reports. Hours later, his mother went to check on him and realized his heart wasn’t beating. After being transported to the hospital, he was later pronounced dead.
Members of the church group say that after Carter, 91, shared the devastating news, he stayed throughout the entire class and even took pictures with anyone who asked.
“That’s the kind of Christian he is. Everything that happens in life, good or bad, he uses as a teaching experience,” said one church-goer.
Carter teaches the class every Sunday, and doesn’t hesitate to share personal stories with his group members, including his battle with cancer.
The cause of Jeremy’s death has not yet been revealed.
