Charles Ramsey, the man who saved Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus from ten years of captivity in someone’s basement, reminds me of my own family.

My cousins and uncles are all a little rough around the edges, they all might have a vice or two, they all love McDonalds…but they are all good people. People with a heart of gold, people who would give their last, not because they have it in abundance, but because they know what it’s like to have nothing.

Let me back up for a minute. If you’re reading this, your already know Charles Ramsey took the internet by storm with his very Sweet Brown-esque rant on the news, explaining how he helped rescue Amanda Berry. He went from eating McDonalds, to kicking in a door, to being in total shock because he ate ribs and listened to salsa music with the suspected kidnapper.

Ramsey’s over the top antics, uncombed hair, missing tooth and love for McDonalds have caused blacks to label Chuck a coon. Many claim they’re glad he’s a hero, but he still makes black people look bad.

I beg to differ – because like I said earlier – Charles Ramsey looks like, talks like, and act like any member of my family.

My Uncle Alvin worked with his hands, he fixed things, cleaned windows and painted. He would come home sweaty, covered in paint, hands filthy and he looked a bit scary, but I knew him. I knew he was one of the nicest men in the world. Silly, goofy, and would give you the shirt off his back to make sure you didn’t go without.

He knew right from wrong and that’s all that matters. He might never have said things with the elegance of Barack Obama, but he was without a doubt a smart cookie. Whether he mispronounced words or used slang, Alvin was family and he was a good guy.

So I take offense when people say Charles Ramsey is bad for the black race. I say, to the contrary.

Mainstream America needs to see Blacks like Charles Ramsey doing more stuff like this! Mainstream America needs to be faced with the truth that a man like Mr. Ramsey is just as capable, willing and more than qualified to take action and do the right thing. Maybe then they can stop judging, stop being afraid, stop seeing a reason to stop and frisk and racially profile.

Because if we see more people like Charles Ramsey and Sweet Brown doing great things, the more likely our young men and women will be to provide for themselves. To get jobs that pay for healthcare so they can get their teeth fixed. So they have more money and maybe they won’t have to eat McDonalds like Uncle Ramsey.

The more we see people like Charles Ramsey, Sweet Brown, Antoine Dodson or whomever else, the more acceptable the world becomes for all of us.
