Chicago gun violence strikes again, this time injuring a 9-year-old boy who is now in critical condition.

The boy, who was riding in the car with his mother and her gang member boyfriend, was shot in the chest when a passerby opened fire on the car.

According to Chicago CBS:

A bullet went through the back door of the car, striking the boy in the chest.

The boyfriend fled the car, and the mother drove on to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital. Police put up crime tape to secure the car at the hospital.

Family members at the hospital said the boy was out of surgery Wednesday night, and is expected to pull through.

The boy’s family would not comment about his injuries, but did say they believe the boy was wounded by mistake.

At this time, no suspects are in custody.

We pray for his speedy recovery.
