TARIQ, BRAYDEN & EFFIE

In an attempt to find out what the Feds have on him, Tariq calls Lauren (Paige Hurd) and tries to convince her to spill the beans. She brings up the fact they’re saying he’s a monster and a killer. He explains that he only did what he had to do to take care of the people he loves. He explains that if Lauren wants her life back, she has to work with him. Meanwhile, Brayden (Gianni Paolo) has an issue with his woman too. After he expresses that he’s distracted by him and Tariq’s current situation, Kiki (Moriah Brown) reveals that she knows they are moving drugs out of Weston Holdings. Brayden reluctantly admits that she’s right. There conversation gets cut short when Cane (Woody McClain) sends him a text about an emergency meeting. At the meeting, Monet (Mary J. Blige) is looking for ideas to get the Russians off of their backs. She notices that Tariq is visibly down. After finding out that he’s in a bad mood because of everything happening with Lauren, Monet sets him straight. He comes to his senses and comes up with a plan to get the Russians roped up by the cops when their next shipment arrives. Later on, Tariq met up with Tate (Larenz Tate) and made a deal. Tariq told him that he could give the information to his old NYPD friends and take credit for the drug bust to get his numbers up in the polls.

Elsewhere, Tariq visits Effie (Alix Lapri) to get the picture of Noma and her kid. She tells Tariq that she’ll give it to him if he lets her back in the game. Both of them bring up trust and it blows up into yet another argument. While they’re arguing at Stansfield, Brayden was at Weston Holdings uncovering some very suspicious activity. The next day, Effie goes to the roof only to peep that there’s a camera up there now. She hits Cane to let him know and to set up a meeting. Cane brings Effie some product but it’s way less than what she expected. She emphasizes that her tuition is due now and she needs more. Cane offers to pay her tuition but she pridefully declines. Later on she goes to talk to someone about her tuition situation but is surprised to find out that her tuition was paid for the rest of the term. Without second thought, she knew it was Cane. She texted him and reminded him that she said she didn’t need his help. He only responded by saying ‘You’re welcome’ which brought a smile to Effie’s face.

Someone who didn’t have a smile on their face…Brayden. After doing his research, he realized that his family’s business was actually a Ponzi sheme. He tries to bring it Kiki but she brushes it off and says everything seems normal and that she’ll look over it in the morning. Brayden doesn’t want to hear it and tells her he needs to talk to his Uncle. Lucas (David Walton) declines  his nephews claims at first then comes out and admits it. He tells Brayden that he should be thanking him from saving their family from ruin. Lucas then asks Brayden who else he showed the documents to. After Brayden lies and says no one, Lucas calls in Kiki, who is actually in on it too. When they explain how they’re doing what they’re doing, Brayden calls them criminals. Lucas and Kiki surprise Brayden by letting him know that they’re aware that him and Tariq are running a drug operation at Weston Holdings. Ironically enough, they had known from the beginning and actually hoped they did it so it would coincide with what they had going on. Brayden realizes that Tariq’s trust fund money and the Tejada’s just in case money were wrapped in it and requests them both back. Lucas says no and threatens to out the drug organization if Brayden opens his mouth about what he knows. Kiki expresses that she actually likes Brayden and they don’t have to lie to each other anymore. Are Cane and Effie going to be a couple now? Is there any chance that Effie can get back on Tariq’s good side? Will Brayden tell Tariq and the Tejadas what’s going on with their money? How will Weston Holdings being a Ponzi scheme impact RSJ (Gbenga Akinnagbe)?

THE TASK FORCE (JENNY SULLIVAN & BLANCA RODRIGUEZ)…& COOPER SAXE

Councilman Tate was able to help Saxe (Shane Johnson) and Davis (Cliff ‘Method Man’ Smith) an expedited parole hearing for Theo (Jordan Mahome). Saxe tells Davis that as long as Theo comes off as sincere, they don’t have anything to worry about. Before Theo enters the room, Davis once again asks if there’s anything new on the possible investigation of Lauren’s murder. Saxe again lies and tries to throw it by the wayside. Once Theo arrives, Saxe gives him a practice session to prepare him for what he was about to go through. Theo answered the questions horribly and Davis knew it. Luckily for him, Saxe hinted that there might be another way. Saxe asks Jenny (Paton Ashbrook) to swap out a member of Theo’s parole panel. Jenny is very hesitant to agree until Saxe spills that Davis has one of Kevin Whitman’s files in his office. She eventually gives him the green light to go ahead with his plan. Saxe warns Jenny that if she lies to or blindsides him in any way, he won’t hesitate to burn her. Before he leaves, he asks Jenny if there’s any way if someone in the DA’s office or Lauren herself told Tariq about the investigation. An oblivious Jenny says absolutely not.

After witnessing Tate on television gloating about the drug bust of the Russians, the task force becomes very intrigued by how he got the tip. They conclude that Tariq and Tate are working together and the drugs that they’ve confiscated over the past few days are also connected. Blanca (Monique Gabriela Curnen) suspects that if Tariq isn’t moving drugs on the street, he’s definitely moving them through Weston Holdings. She goes on to say that although he and Brayden might be careful, but their customers might not be. While Jenny and Blanca searched for any clue they could find to help them catch Tariq and Brayden, Saxe found government official he could bribe to help get Theo out. He first needed Davis’ go ahead and secondly, cash. Saxe was given both. Saxe’s plan worked out exactly how it was supposed to because later on in the episode, Theo was free. He and Davis went to the rooftop they always visited as kids to celebrate. Even though it was supposed to be a glorious occasion, Theo was not happy. He knew that Davis did something illegal to get him out. He mentions how him doing that defeats the whole purpose of him taking the bid for him back in the day. He orders his younger brother to take him to the rehabilitation facility and to never talk to him again.

Thanks to Agent Young doing some undercover work (digging in trash outside of Weston Holdings), Agent Young (Kevin Tyler Rodriguez) came up clutch for the task force. The packaging for the drugs he found was a match to the drugs they found at Stansfield and at the shootout crime scene from earlier in the episode. Jenny told Blanca and Agent Young that Effie, who was another person of interest, popped up on their roof cameras. That wasn’t the big thing though. She finally told them the truth that Lauren was still alive. The task force now had enough to go through with a R.I.C.O., which Lauren basically told Tariq on their next phone call. Tariq asks Lauren to meet with him before she says anything to them. He assures her that he has proof that she can trust him.

Tariq is able to finagle a disguise and meets Lauren in a bathroom just before she is supposed to testify to the cops. He plays her a recording of the conversation him and Effie had earlier in the episode. This was all Lauren needed to hear to confirm that Tariq didn’t try to kill her and she could trust him. When she realized she could, she told him that the Feds were building a RICO case against him and the Tejadas. She shares the information that they have on him and tells him that it’s all about to happen right then. Lauren agrees to get Tariq as much time as she can. Out loud, a confused Tariq wonders how Saxe couldn’t have seen this coming. Lauren then breaks it to Tariq that Saxe actually did know. She goes even further when she tells him that Saxe is actually working with the cops, which puts Tariq in an even more uneasy headspace. How long will it take Tariq to tell Davis that Saxe is on the other side? What will the two of them do to fix their new problem? What will Lauren say to the Feds now that she knows Tariq wasn’t trying to kill her? Will Theo ruin his own freedom?

THE TEJADAS

Following their attack on the Russians and the Russians retaliation at Lorenzo’s funeral, it seems as if the Tejada family is in the midst of a war. The episode begins with some of the Tejada’s men being ambushed by some Russians. Monet thinks Gordo (Erik Hernandez) is to blame since he pinned Lorenzo’s murder on the Russians. She demands that he stops seeing Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray) immediately. Gordo realizes that Monet isn’t actually scared about the Russians but instead nervous about Dru finding out that she had Lorenzo killed. He defiantly tells her that he’s going to continue to deal with Dru and she won’t do anything about it. After he and Gordo got all the product off the corners, Dru asks when and where the Russians next shipment was. This made Gordo’s brothers upset. They felt like if they took on a bigger risk (which they would be by giving up that specific information), they should be getting a bigger cut. Dru tells them that there’s no way they can do that. Before they decide to attack Dru, Gordo steps in and tells his brothers that it’s on all of them. He goes on to explain that they’re basically family and they’re going to stand by the Tejada’s like their father would’ve wanted. When Dru finally makes it back to Monet’s house, he sees that she’s there with Kai (Sean Nelson). Dru and Monet ask him if they can help them put the Russians down. Kai responds by letting them know 12 of his men got arrested the week before and he’s stretched thin at the moment. Once Kai leaves, Dru gives Monet an update on the Castillos situation. While talking, Dru expresses that he feels like he and Gordo can be something serious. Monet urges him to remember that just because he and Gordo are on the same page, it doesn’t mean his brothers will be too.

After Dru couldn’t stay for dinner because he and Cane had work to handle, Monet reached out to Diana (LaToya Tonodeo). She was also busy though, at an open mic type event on campus with Becca (Samantha Blaire Cutler) and BruShandria ( LightSkinKeisha). At the event, Salim (Petey McGee) tries to get back on Diana’s good side by publicly reciting a poem to her. She doesn’t find it amusing and walks out. Salim follows her and the two begin to argue. He brings up the fact that she’s messing with Tariq again and how he knows that she’s selling drugs out of the candy store. Although she denies it, Salim tells her to clear her stuff out because she’s done. Without giving up too much, Diana calls Monet and hips her to everything going on with Salim. Diana calms her mother down by reminding her that she taught her everything she knows. Di shows up to the candy store and drops some bombs on Salim. First, she reveals that she knows his real name. Then she shows him some photos of him growing up. Lastly, she brings up the fact that he was adopted by white people at a very young age and his whole story is a lie. Salim knows that he can’t do anything so he concedes and tells Diana he won’t say anything. Diana wasn’t done there. She demands that Salim take less hours at the store and that he give her a raise.

Later at Kai’s spot, Monet proposes a partnership. She not only wants to work with Kai in business, she also offers him her mind and the rest of her. At least that what she tells him. As soon as Monet and Kai are about to kiss, they hear gunshots outside. Monet uses it as her chance to catch Kai slipping. She pulls out her knife to stab I’m but Kai clocks her and attacks her. Luckily for her, Cane was standing outside the room and got there in enough time to shoot and kill Kai. Monet shows her appreciation for him being there but tells him to go check on Dru, who was waiting outside. As Cane goes to get his brother, Monet grabs Kai’s phone and sends a message to an unsaved number that says “I think they know the Russians didn’t do Lorenzo. We need to talk.” Once Dru and Cane make it back inside, the number texts Kai’s phone back. The response text asks “When do you want to meet?” As Dru reads it, he pieces together that Kai killed Lorenzo. Monet grabs the phone, acts as if she’s reading the message for the first time and proceeds to play the game. She tells her sons that Kai was too scared to go against Lorenzo himself and he was working with someone else. She orders them to set up a meeting with the person and kill them. They both agree but Cane looks at Monet as if he knows something is off.

Monet, Dru and Cane pullup on one of the leaders of the Russians. They come with a piece offering, in the form of Kai’s head. It turns out that this was enough for the Russians to be okay with calling a truce with the Tejadas. Later on, Dru and Gordo discuss how serious things are between them. Gordo tells Dru that he would’ve given up his family for him. He then tells Dru that he has to leave to handle some business, which reminds Dru of his. Dru texts the number from the night before to let the person know he’s on his way. He is immediately devastated when the text goes to Gordo’s phone. He grabs a gun and shoots Gordo in the chest while he’s showering, killing him. Cane rushes to the room after Dru pulls the trigger and consoles his brother. When Monet pulls up, all she can do is hold Dru as he cries his life away. The family meets at Monet’s to have their first family dinner since Lorenzo’s death. Unfortunately, the good times don’t last long. As they’re eating, Jenny, Blanca and the DEA  raid their house. Surprisingly, the Tejada that gets arrested is Diana. Will Diana fold or stand strong for her family? When will Dru (and the other children for that matter) find out all the dirt Monet’s been doing? How will they respond when they do? What will be Tariq, Brayden, Effie and the Tejadas plan to get out of the R.I.C.O.? How will the case effect business with Noma (Caroline Chikezie) and Obi (Kyle Vincent Terry)?
