One of the first rappers to proclaim hip-hop is dead, Nas’s sentiments seem to have not changed. According to Nas, ‘the games messed up cause everybodys gangsta but they prima donnas.’

‘it’s a beautiful thing, putting out music’ says the rapper, whose been making albums since 1994. ‘It ain’t the music business, it’s n*ggas and their sh*t.’

With the release of his new album with Damien Marley, Distant Realitives, Nas has made it clear that something is missing from the hip-hop world and part of that is due to the money hungry atmosphere it encompasses. No longer are people focused on the elements and what is needed to make good music but the focus has been shifted towards marketing, and how to get the most money.  ‘If you feel good about it, put that sh*t out’ Nas said.

Maybe Nas has a point. Where would the industry be if everybody stopped over thinking the process of making an album and how to increase sales and focused more on the art of it and the feeling that it evokes?
