It was a grand affair last night in Washington D.C. as the Motown Sound took over the White House. A concert celebrating Black History Month and Motown Records. It is a continuation of the music series hosted by President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
Performances by Academy Award and Grammy winning singer/actor Jamie Foxx, who also hosted the event, was joined by John Legend, Seal and Nick Jonas. After the performances President Obama gave a Motown history lesson, explaining how a team of singers from Detroit dissolved America’s racial barriers with the power of melody.
‘At concerts in the South, Motown groups literally brought people together, insisting that the ropes traditionally used to separate black and white audience members be taken down,’ he said. ‘More than 50 years later, that’s the Motown legacy.’
It was a night of celebration and bridging the gap of musical generations from Smokey Robinson to Nick Jonas. You can watch ‘The Motown Sound: In Performance at the White House’ at 8 p.m. Tuesday on WETA.
