Paint The Soles Red!: Kim, Beyonce, Alicia Covet The Red Bottom Christian Louboutin (PHOTOS)
Back in early April Christian Louboutin filed a trademark infringement case against Yves Saint Laurent because of the use of red soles on a red pair of suede “Palais 105” pumps that were released as a part of the YSL Spring 2011 collection.
In actuality, the color of the soles were just a technicality because the shoe got released in 4 color ways, unfortunately the Louboutin corporation did not see it that way.
Christian Louboutin addressed the matter himself by saying, “I have the biggest respect for the house of Yves Saint Laurent. Having discussed the matter with them and not been able to reach an agreement, we have had to take this to court. My company has a trademark on the red sole and if we don’t enforce it this would leave the door open for other brands to copy us while jeopardising the identity of the Louboutin red sole. No one before me has ever used a colored sole to define a brand’s identity. The red sole has become widely recognized as the distinct sign of my brand in the eyes of women all over the world.”
Mr. Louboutin would be right in his assessment of his red sole being a distinct sign of his brand, as every celebrity and socialite all over the world has been seen prancing around town in his infamous red bottom shoes. We get that the shoes look amazing and could make any woman feel like a million bucks when she slips them on, so we get what the fuss is about.
The French fashion house, which happens to be getting sued for $1 million, says that it has been putting red soles on shoes since the Seventies – long before Mr Louboutin. According to court papers, YSL claims that the design feature has existed for centuries. They read: “Red outsoles are a commonly used ornamental design feature in footwear, dating as far back as the red shoes worn by King Louis XIV in the 1600s and the ruby red shoes that carried Dorothy home in The Wizard of Oz.”
Both women and men alike have been seen wearing his creations, but will the increasing popularity of the red sole eventually become its demise? Will celebrities stop wearing the Louboutin once the “common man” begins to also make the shoe their staple?
Only time will tell, but for now you won’t catch your favorite Kardashian in anything else and Beyonce and Victoria Beckham will probably have their red-soled Louboutins on as they sit courtside at the next NBA game. In the meantime check out the YSL shoe that has been causing all the fuss and a few celebrities wearing their favorite “it” shoe after the break.
