Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has decided to step down as Arizona Congresswoman, one year after she was shot in the head during a meet and greet with her constituents.

STORY: Gabby Giffords: One Year Later

The three-term Democrat announced Sunday on her Facebook page that she intends to resign from Congress this week to concentrate on recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Giffords could have stayed in office for another year even without seeking re-election, but her decision to resign has put the political landscape in Arizona in disarray.

Arizona must now hold a special primary and general election to find someone to finish out her term, as well as hold the regular primary and general election later this year.

Gov. Jan Brewer will call the special primary election for the 8th Congressional District likely in April, followed by a general election in June.

As for Giffords, she is expected to attend President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
