The lockdown of the University of Texas campus on Tuesday morning brings back memories of watching live News footage of school shootings from the past. Luckily, the only person harmed in this shooting was the gunman who took his own life. Unfortunately, shootings in the past had deadlier results.

University of Texas has another school shooting in its past that was made known to this generation by the movie ‘Higher Learning.’ On August 1, 1966 Charles Whiteman, an ex-marine, killed 14 people and wounded 32 others during his rampage on campus.

Three of his victims were killed inside the University’s tower and ten more were killed from 29th floor observation deck. Whiteman was eventually killed by Austin Police Officer Houston McCoy. Whitman had murdered his wife and mother at their homes prior to the shootings.

Make sure you dont forget the lives lost because of school shootings.

One of the deadliest shootings took place at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on Monday, April 16, 2007. The shooting took place in two seperate  attacks that took the lives of 32 people and wounded others.

The shooter, Seung-Hui Cho, took his own life afterwards. The massacre was the deadliest peacetime shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history, on or off a school campus.

The Columbine High School massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 and 12 students and 1 teacher were killed in the incident by two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.

Twenty-one students were injured by the gummen and three others were injured when attempting to escape. Harris and Klebold committed suicide in the school.

If you remember the aftermath it created a moral panic aimed at goth culture (especially Marilyn Manson) and violent videogames. No solid link was ever created between goth culture and violent videogames as a reason for the shootings.
