Mitt Romney arrived at the White House early Thursday afternoon for a lunch meeting with the President in a black SUV. He stayed for a little over an hour to engage in a discussion wherein he and Obama exchanged ideas to better the country. According to a White House statement, they also spoke about America’s leadership in the world, while chowing down on white turkey chili and Southwestern grilled chicken salad. The defeated GOP candidate maintained good sportsmanship by congratulating Obama on his re-election and the two promised to keep in touch. The former contestants also digressed to talk about their families and the last weeks of the election campaign.

Earlier that day, Romney met with his former running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, who released a statement after their meeting, saying:

“I remain grateful to Gov. Romney for the honor of joining his ticket this fall, and I cherish our friendship. I’m proud of the principles and ideas we advanced during the campaign and the commitment we share to expanding opportunity and promoting economic security for American families.”

On the night he won the 2012 election, President Obama promised that he would sit down with the defeated GOP candidate to share ideas about improving the economy. The two will conduct a private meeting without the presence of press today in the White House’s private dinning room.

According to reports from the AP:

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama had no specific agenda for the meeting, but he said the president would like to discuss Romney’s ideas for making government more efficient. Obama has proposed merging some functions of government related to business and has asked Congress for authority to undertake some executive branch reorganization.

“The president noted that Gov. Romney did a terrific job running the Olympics and that that skills set lends itself to ideas that could make the federal government work better, which is a passion of the president’s,” Carney said.

Obama aides said they reached out to Romney’s team shortly before Thanksgiving to start working on a date for the meeting. The two men will meet alone in the White House’s private dining room, with no press coverage expected.

During his time visiting Washington, Romney will also visit his former running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan.

After a long and bitter presidential campaign, we’re glad that both Obama and Romney can be adults and work together for the common good of the American people!
